Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born 18 July 1918) is a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.

A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the Afrikaner nationalists of the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was elected President of the Transvaal ANC Branch and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961 but was found not guilty. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.

Mandela served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife. Becoming ANC President, Mandela published his autobiography and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He was elected President and formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to diffuse ethnic tensions. As President, he established a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. Continuing the former government's liberal economic policy, his administration introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty and expand healthcare services. Internationally, he acted as mediator between Libya and the United Kingdom in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial, and oversaw military intervention in Lesotho. He declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki, subsequently becoming an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Controversial for much of his life, right-wing critics denounced Mandela as a terrorist and communist sympathiser. He has nevertheless received international acclaim for his anti-colonial and anti-apartheid stance, having received over 250 awards, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name of Madiba or as tata; he is often described as "the father of the nation".

Purchasing an original artwork or print does not grant the buyer the right to copy. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: if you find any image on a website other than this one or on Amazon.com, which contains my name in the bottom left corner and the Fine Art America watermark at the bottom right corner of that image, it is there ILLEGALLY and therefore, STILL CANNOT LEGALLY be downloaded, uploaded, transmitted, copied, edited, published, printed, or reproduced in any way or form without my express written permission.

As they say, art is a form of personal expression. This website is able to offer you several options on what background material and size you would like the artist’s work to be printed. However here, I am also offering you the opportunity to personalize even further the artwork you choose by providing the option of formats the artwork could take. What you see here doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what you have to get.
For example … you might wish one of my “Colourful Individuals” photographs as: “Black and White” (plain, textured or embossed); “Sepia” (plain or embossed); “Painted” (with or without texture) or just have the original “Embossed”; or you could go even further and have one made into something more digitally manipulated as in my “Individuals of Different Shapes” Gallery … or even more abstract as in my “Colour Composition of Nature” Gallery. You might favour one of my mixed media “Portraits” in a different colour. Perhaps you would like to select several items to be made into a collage or have a collage broken down into individual pieces. You may wish an item to be flipped horizontally or vertically or the name of your final decision to be printed on it. I have tried to design the Galleries so they can all be mixed and matched for any particular artistic statement you might wish to make. So, this website is about you and what you like … I’m just providing pieces and abilities I have to help you do that.

If you see an item in any one of my Galleries and would like to see it in the format of another, or even a format I haven’t tried yet … don’t hesitate to drop me a line. I would be more than happy to help make the artwork you choose fit YOUR personal expression!

I know ... I'm supposed to have a biography in this space - so, here’s a little about me …

DRAWING: A friend drew a portrait for me in the late 1970’s … so I thought I would give it a try and have been drawing pencil portraits since for myself, family and friends. Some have been submitted to magazines. And April 2012 marks my first attempts with drawing with colour pencil.

PHOTOGRAPHY: I began just a few years ago to take photographs of the beauty in my own backyard.

PAINTINGS, DIGITAL ART and MIXED MEDIA: Since I began uploading those photographs and pencil drawings to sell here, I’ve begun to mess around with them on the computer … just for something different.

THE FUTURE: I’m hoping to expand my artistic ability to more genres as time passes. For the present, all skills which have brought me to this point pertaining to what you see on this website are still evolving … because they are all self-taught.

I hope you’ve enjoyed what you’ve seen. May whatever you purchase be a good representation of you! And if your artistic expression changes, please allow me to help you convey it with another piece at that time. Thanks again for your visits and your purchases! ...J. McCombie

Leading The Way

Description:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela embodies the spirit of the Adinkra Symbols his courage and leadership played such an important part in his role in unifying his country.

Wikipedia has a very good bio and I will quote from that.

"A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended the Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was unsuccessfully prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961. Influenced by Marxism, he secretly joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) and sat on its Central Committee. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the SACP he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a sabotage campaign against the apartheid government. In 1962, he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Nelson Mandela served over 27 years in prison.

About:

Tony B. Conscious, known to many around the world simply as 'THE GHETTO VAN-GO' is one of the Hottest political, HIP HOP, HISTORICAL and spiritual pop artist on the west coast , and probably in the world.

Crowned in the nineties on Venice Beach in California, THE NUMBER ONE AND HARDEST WORKING ARTIST ON THE BOARDWALK, he has been doing this style (which he has named and patented 'FLY DYE ART') for a long time.

Inspired by JEAN MICHAEL BASQUAIT, this 'Aerosol Avatar' uses spray paint, handmade self created stencils, acrylic, lacquer, wood and ??? to create some of the most memorable one of a kind masterpieces one would and could ever find anywhere on the planet...

TONY B. CONSCIOUS(aka ANTHONY BROWN) was born in Seattle, Washington as the first of three children. He has been an exceptional communicator every since he became able to speak and write. As a youth, he was noted as an extremely prolific student whose favorite subjects were History and Creative Writing. He was presented with several achievement awards and certificates as well as numerous trophies and plaques based upon his ability to convey his thoughts, ideas and dreams through the use of words.

As a teen, he was completely turned off by the school system and their blatantly one-sided cirriculum that glorified EUROPEAN conquest and taught nothing about the prestige, achievements, civilizations, talents and or culture of AFRICA, AFRICAN PEOPLE nor their descendants. So subsequently, he started skipping school and hanging with the brothas and sistahs from the street.

Trouble soon followed and he found himself in Juvenile Detention Centers from any where between 30 days to 6 months at a time. It was here that he was able to truly perfect his writing skills, while reading and studying the subjects that most interested him (AFRICAN & AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY). This is also where he was first introduced to hip-hop and rap. He would listen to the other brothas’ writings and formulate his own knowledge, opinions and observations into rap lyrics, poems and songs that he could easily remember and recite at a moment’s notice. This made him very popular amongst his peers and the counselors. His words oftentimes would rehabilitate, educate and motivate others to take action in their lives.
Soon after he was released and relinquished from probation, he started writing raps’ with and for the local hip-hop groups in Seattle. This is where and when he received the name “R-O-M-E-O”: (Rappin’ On the Mic Every Opportunity). He was known for always having an innovative rap to say about being BLAK in America, Lovin’ the women or battlin’ other m.c’s.

In the early nineties, he was led by spirit from Seattle to Los Angeles, California. It was here that he was first introduced to “SPOKEN-WORD POETRY”, “HOLLYWOOD” and was very successful in networking his way into several movies such as “HIGHER LEARNING”, “NAKED GUN 33 1/3”, “SOUL OF THE GAME” and “LOW DOWN DIRTY SHAME”. He has also been featured on several television shows, such as: “TOWNSEND TELEVISION”, “IN THE HOUSE”, “MARTIN” and “SLIDERS”.

Despite his incredible acting abilities’, he made a vow to always remain true to his ancestors’ spirits and his people. He became an instant legend in LOS ANGELES’ “spoken-word poetry” scene for always speaking on issues and truths that other brothas and sistahs were afraid to touch. It was here that he recieved the title “TONY B. CONSCIOUS”. However, this didn’t go over to well in HOLLYWOOD. As a consequence, he was forced to look for other work, while trying to raise the capital to self-publish his books and produce his spoken word tape.
Because of his ability to empower others, TONY B. met up with QUEEN SISTAH CHARMAIN, and formed the group “N2WISHN”, a multi-talented, musical entity that not only fused JAZZ, R&B and HIP-HOP in perfect harmonious melodies, they also brought “SPOKEN-WORD POETRY” plus African drumming and dance to the masses in an astonishing way never, ever heard before. N2WISHN not only entertained, they also informed by stressing the importance of Cultural Awareness, UNITY, and connecting with Mother Earth, Nature, the Elements, the Animals, the Ancestors and above all... THE CREATOR !!!

Soon After all of this,  he once again decided to go back to his roots and foundation, Hip Hop and Soul. He has been on stage and on tour with KRS-ONE, GRANDMASTER FLASH, KOOL HERC, BUSY BEE, PUBLIC ENEMY, KOOL MO DEE, GRANDMASTER CAZ, PARIS, TUPAC and ERYKAH BADU just to name a few.

HE is and will be, until he passes on to the next dimension, truly the personification of...
HIP HOP.

Angel Madiba - Nelson Mandela

Description:

Nelson Mandela:

Nelson Mandela was given the name "Rolihlahla" at birth by his father on July 18, 1918. It translates literally to "pulling the branch of a tree" or "trouble maker". He was born at Mvezo, a tiny village on the banks of the Mbashe River, in the district of Umata, the capital of the Trankei. The Transkei is 800 miles east of Cape Town, 550 miles south of Johannesburg and is in-between the Kei River and the Natal Border. His father, Gadla Henry Mpakanyiswa, was confirmed as chief of Mvezo by the king of the Thembu tribe. Nelson's father had three wives, the third was Nelson's mother. Nelson is the youngest of his father's four sons and has three sisters. The Xhosa Tribe: Nelson is a member of the Xhosa tribe which is part of the Nguni people. The Xhosa are proud people who believe in the importance of laws, education, and courtesy. Every individual knew his or her place. They acquired knowledge through observation. In his household, he never asked his parents a question, he must learn it himself. There were many stories passed on from generation to generation depicting Xhosa warriors. The stories all had a moral, mostly depicting virtue and generosity. The Xhosa children's lives were shaped by custom, ritual, and taboo. Men followed the path of their fathers, women did so with their mothers.

Very brief CV – Asbjorn Lonvig

I was born in the first half of last century. I’m a 49er. Not bad, especially not bad in San Francisco. Not bad at all. My grandchildren love Santa Claus. Some knows it’s me, some don’t. I was born in the city of gable paintings Brande, Denmark. I even have made one myself. In high school – it was in 1966 to 1968 - I was crazy about art. I visited the New Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum in Copenhagen with works of Picassos, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Heni de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Vincent van Gogh. Amazing. However IT became my career choice. In 1970s I joined one of the first groups of Software Engineer Trainees educated by IBM. IBM people from the Palo Alto Development Center went to Denmark to see how that young man in the early 20s had solved a non-solvable software problem. I became manager of a medical IT-department, I started my own Software Company. I sold my Software Company in 1985 and became probably the first IT-millionaire in Denmark. I became an artist 1 April 1986 at 2 p.m. I managed to stay away from IT for some time. In a French Art Magazine I read about the Internet’s future impact on Art. I immediately lunched a concept combining IT, the Internet and Art.

After that my English improved by receiving lots of nasty e-mails: 'You sir, are a disgrace to artists!', '…your painting make me feel sick by just looking at the colors'. 'You, my dear sir, are a low-life, not worthy your web space, and not at all the money you get', 'dumbest shit', 'plain shit', 'old twat', 'fucking stupid', 'those pieces of shit', 'ridiculous 'sculptures'', 'trash poem', 'SHIT DOODLES', 'ignorant idiot', 'you don't know shit about art', 'you have no talent', 'old brain dead fat ass', 'if anyone actually likes your work they are too ignorant to realize...', 'go have a heart attack or something before you spread any more of this disgusting crap on earth'.

In 2006 I was granted The World of Art Award (WAA) in London UK, Juxtaposition 2006 in Rome, Italy and International Graphic Design Award in Montreal, Canada. In 2009 I was chosen as one of the 100 contemporary artists worldwide to be included in the Art Book Creative GENIUS.

NEW: These days I am designing a collection of motifs (the Paris, France 2010 collection) inspired by my stays in Paris, France. I'm working with inspiration by Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Paris - Basilique du Sacré-CÅ“ur, Champs Élysées - Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Arch of Triumph - Arc de Triomphe, The Grande Arche de La Défense - La Grande Arche de La Défense, The Eiffel Tower - La Tour Eiffel, The Pompidou Centre - Centre Georges Pompidou, Red Mill or the 'Red Windmill' - Moulin Rouge, Rosette - South Rose Window Notre Dame de Paris, City Flag of Paris, City Coate of Arms Paris, The sarcophagus of Napoleon Bonaparte Les Invalides - Le tombeau de Napoléon L'église Saint-Louis-des-Invalides, The new Bridge - Pont Neuf, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, Mona Lisa - La Gioconda or La Joconde Hommage à Léonardo da Vincy, The Louvre Museum - Le Musee du Louvre, The Louvre Pyramid - Pyramide du Louvre, The Statue of Liberty - Statue de la Liberté, The City Hall - l'Hôtel de Ville, The Palace of Versailles (on UNESCO’s World Heritage list) - Le Château de Versailles, The Versailles Orangery - L' Orangerie du Château de Versailles etc. In Paris I thoroughly photographed each site. I have collected all the background material about each of the above landmarks that I could get hold of.

About:

I was born in Lagos – the former capital of Nigeria, just after Nigeria proclaimed herself an independent entity, at a time my father was working as a cook for some Italian specialist who handed us the eating-with-fork macaroni heritage. My native village is called Ikot Ekong meaning the family of warriors, located some 18 kilometers from the shores of the Atlantic ocean on the south eastern delta region on the country. My childhood memories habour vivid moments of feats that would later be classified as artistic manifestations. Everything about Arts came to me so naturally. If my uncle’s weaving of cane baskets and chairs, or my father’s later being a photographer or even my other uncle’s love for hot jokes were anything to be termed Artistic- these were only to be discernable to me later in life, when self awareness would lead to analysis of the genetic concoction that moulded into substantiality that being that is now me.

I spent my childhood shuttling between the village and the slums of the then capital city Lagos, thereby satisfying my fathers desire to see his children, well rooted in their tribal soil. One such trip in 1966 to the village sealed us for three years from our father who was out there in the capital when the Nigerian civil war broke out in 1967. Memories of village women returning from the farm, a constant sight as the African sun would set, was to later become a powerful source of inspiration and motifs for my creative Arts.My father’s being a photographer heightened my level of anthropomorphic appreciation, this would later give me an edge over other architecture students during renderings with human figures. My studies at the secondary school saw me presiding over an Arts club in a college that had no Fine Arts in its curriculum, and also saw me in the 4th form sitting externally for GCE Fine Art exams and scoring a C6 for this subject that I had never been classically taught. My parents wanted me to be a Medical Doctor, so my gaining admission to the Polytechnic in 1981 to read Biochemistry was seen as a stepping stone to this dream. One evening, I had strolled to the architecture department and stumbled on sketches scattered on the floor of the studio. I picked them up and exclaimed “Boy ! This is what I can do” , this moment changed everything in me. The next Day, I went to the Dean of the Biochemistry and told him I would change to the Architecture department. He told me I could only do that the next academic year. I had to continue with Biochemistry till the end of the year, bearing with equanimity the pains that the futility of my endeavor brought.

I transferred successfully to the first year of Architecture the next year, my joy had no limits, for the first time in my life I could draw and be formally assessed. On completing the ordinary Diploma, and working in 1985 I got a scholarship to study Architecture in the then Soviet Union, completed my MSc.in1991 And Ph.D. in 1994. While in Moscow For the preliminary defense in 1995, I had brought along some of my paintings and in a bit to raise some money for my up-keeping. I visited several Art galleries, the interest they showed towards hosting my personal exhibition fuelled me up. My Visa was expiring and had even no money cash to frame my works. I returned to Kazakhstan after three months and said to myself ‘if Moscow could recognize me why wouldn’t Almaty’. This feeling flared my desire to hatch out as a full fledged Artist . Six months later with the Assistance of a one-time Kazakhstan Deputy minister of culture, I had my first Art exhibition that I called “The Return” seeing this as the return to myself as an Artist, and being the first black artist to ever exhibit in Kazakhstan.

About:

b. 29 April 1983

A throbbing wealth of past experience in many different industries such as construction, marketing, entertainment and photographic modelling, Tylo is also an engaging entity carved from heartbreak and raw human experience with a sheer talent for finding and elucidating aesthetic beauty.

His impressive CV includes several wide-ranging qualifications in art well as being published in several esteemed publications nationally and internationally. He has also been involved with private and corporate art collections and commissions around the globe.

His intimate understanding of the human condition of physical and emotional pain has led to various philanthropic works such as being the former spokesperson for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and he is currently the spokesperson for the Divan Serfontein Miracle Child Foundation.

His raw ambition for corporate success as well as his heartfelt philanthropic side led to the birth of Silver Synergy in 2006, an international consulting, distribution and commissioning agency. Here Tylo elucidated the talents of national artists as well as international ones.

Tylo’s own works can only be described as visually and viscerally overwhelming works of paint that causes even an unappreciative soul to stop and stare. They are expressive amalgamations of research and life experience which gives birth to what can only be called lyrically-inspired tributes that sensually explore the many complexities of life that every person can relate to on an ethereal level.

The timeless words of Constantin Brancusi which says to “paint like a god, command like a king and work like a slave” are words which strongly reflect Tylo’s own motto when it comes to creating works of art. A work is never completed without musical inspiration and this is evident in the superb movement of colours, strokes and life which pound through his paint.

Tylo cites his favourite artists as the before-his-time Da Vinci and the complex colours and lithe movements of Tay Dall. It is an evocative work of Dall named “Everything” that Tylo says captures ‘him’ in its emotive movements of light, imagery and visual boldness.

He also has a critical eye when it comes to society’s flawed mores and doctrines and this is evident in his blog, “How Tylo C’s It”. On it, he comments on the huge controversy the painting “The Spear” caused and there are also the more light-hearted images of comical social situations which can only be found in South Africa.

Tylo, former angelic-featured teen photographic model and super-industry person, will always find a new niche to conquer and will do so with a touch of sublime sophistication.
