Incarceration

Description:

This mixed media artwork, based on original photos taken by the artist of Robben Island, is part of a series of works showing the prison to honour the memory of Nelson Mandela, who was jailed there for much of his 27 years as a political prisoner. This image is of one of the group cells on Robben Island. It is entitled, “Shared Experience” because it shows the bunk beds and how many men were packed into the small space. Yet, it was the interaction of this group of men that later forged the ideals of a New South Africa. As Mandela recounted later no matter how dire the circumstances, he never lost hope for a better life for his people and for all of South Africa.

At first the artist wanted to show the scenes of Robben Island as dark and drab, but soon was inspired to show the colour and light that the inmates brought to Robben Island. As Marianne Williamson noted, “There is no holier place on earth where a past hatred becomes a present love.” Mandela and the other political prisoners have given hope to people the world over that by overcoming adversity and hatred and allowing compassion and forgiveness, we can all strive to make this world a better place to live for all.

This work is rich in colors and texture. The strong geometric design contrasts with the beautiful light coming through the bars in the windows and reflecting off of the ceiling and floor. This highly textured work of art literally shimmers with colours. The original is hand glazed with many layers of acrylic paint and varnish to really bring out the beautiful colors and create a three dimensional effect. Thus, each limited edition of the series is a unique work of art and valuable as an investment piece.
