Portrait of Mandela 1950

Description:

This portrait of Nelson Madela sits beside a quote from his speech on World Heritage Day 1997. The quote overlay was applied in a graphics editing program. The quote from Mandela, "With Democracy, we have the opportunity to ensure that our institutions reflect history in a way that respects the heritage of all our citizens." appears to the right of the portrait.

About:

My paintings, drawings and prints explore the sociology of individual isolation, collective connection and social exclusion with a postmodern aesthetic.

Within these parameters, I create representations reflective of my movement through life, my influences ranging from Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Toulouse Lautrec and Ralph Ellison.

Ever since I began creating art, I have been fascinated by how the individual both influences and is affected by their surrounding society, and how both objectivity and control sits in a miasma of illusion.

An active viewer, authentic in their intent, is left with their own way of connecting psychologically with a version of the artist – a snapshot of the artist's emotional and mental profile, the unconstrained work acting as a proxy between the communicator and the viewer in the dance of artistic exchange.
